Giving a person a beard in Photoshop is easy, but how do you remove it? In this tutorial, we’ll cover that.

Remove beard

To remove a beard in Photoshop, we’ll need a bearded person.

Open the program and immediately create a duplicate layer — Ctrl + J. Go to the menu Filter-Blur-Surface blurFilter-Blur-Surface blur and set the values: radius RadiusRadius — 30-40, threshold ThresholdThreshold — 60-80. Everything depends on the quality of your photo and its resolution. Here’s approximately what we should get:

Set OpacityOpacity to 50-45%, then create a mask — on the layers panel, click the Add vector maskAdd vector mask option.

Now take the Brush ToolBrush, select black as the color and soft edges, and start brushing over the eyes, mouth, ears... in short, remove the unsharp areas.

Better already, but the beard is still there :)

Let’s continue. Uncheck the visibility of the top layer and select the bottom layer — the BackgroundBackground.

Take the brush again, but this time with an opacity of about 30-40% and a flow of 40-50%. Press Alt to sample the skin color, then brush over the remaining beard. Do this carefully, as the actions cannot be undone later.

Once the editing is complete, turn the top layer back on — and here’s the result:

But we need to finish the tutorial — add some sharpness to the image, since we may have overdone the blurring. So, go to the menu Filter-Sharpen-Smart SharpenFilter-Sharpen-Smart Sharpen and set the values that will make your original file a masterpiece :) My settings were: AmountAmount — 110%, RadiusRadius — 1px.
