In this Photoshop tutorial we’ll learn how to add editable classic vignette effect for the photos perfect for wedding or engagement party, anniversaries and other family portraits! To create this effect very easily, and will take us no more than a couple of minutes from the commencement to the end. Used Photoshop CS5, but will work on all recent versions of Photoshop.

Take one of the wedding photos. And the final version just on the court:
Step 1: Add a white solid color fill layer
Open the picture in Photoshop, fill a layer with white color, which will be the color of the border of the vignette. Just add a new layer and press CTRL + Backspace (if selected white background color) or ALT + Backspace (if selected white foreground color). Now click on the icon create a new adjustment layer (located at the bottom of the layers panel):
Displays a list of adjustment layers that we can select Solid Color at the top of the list:
As the name suggests, a solid Color fill layer allows you to quickly populate the document with the required color. Once you select solid color from the list, Photoshop opens the color palette and we can choose the color we will use. Choose white, either by clicking in the upper left corner of the window in a color picker or by entering the numbers 255 for R, G and B values:
Click OK to close the color palette and the document is filled with solid white:
Step 2: Select the layer mask
So why do we use Solid Color, instead of just add a normal layer and fill it white? The reason is that the next step we need to add a layer mask filled with white layer. If we look at the layers panel, we see the point of the fill layer “Color Fill 1” which is above the original image and the thumbnail of the layer mask directly to the left of the layer name. Click on the mask thumbnail to select it.
Step 3: Select tool Elliptical Marquee Tool
Select Elliptical Marquee Tool on the toolbar. By default, it hides behind the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Click on the Rectangular Marquee Tool, hold mouse button pressed for a second or two, select the desired tool from the list:
Step 4: Drag and drop the “oval”selection
With the help of Elliptical Marquee Tool selected, click inside the document and drag a circular selection in the center of the document. You can move the selection outline as if you draw. Hold space bar and drag it to its new location, release the spacebar to continue selecting. Don’t worry about its exact size, shape or position, because now we can easily fix them later. All we need at the moment is the initial contour elliptic selection:
Step 5: Fill the selection with black
Go to menu “Edit” in the menu bar at the top of the screen and choose fill:
This opens the dialog box “Fill”. Change at the top of the dialog box color to black:
Click OK to close the dialog box “Fill”. Photoshop fills the selected area with black color, as well as the selected layer mask, black will effectively punch a hole through the fill layer, revealing the original photo:
The thumbnail of the layer mask in the layers panel shows us the dark area:
Step 6: Remove the selection
We don’t need now the choice of the contour, so remove it from the document. You can press Ctrl+D (Win) / Command+D (Mac) to quickly deselect:
Step 7. Apply filter “Blur Gaussian”
To soften the edges of the vignette border, we’ll use filter Photoshop Gaussian Blur. Go to the filter menu at the top of the screen, then choose “Gaussian Blur”:
Opens the filter dialog box. Drag the radius slider at the bottom of the dialog box to the right. The more you drag the slider, the more blurring will be applied to the edges of the vignette and softer they will become.
Click OK when finished with the filter to close the dialog box. Edge to your vignette should be softer:
Step 8: Modify and move the border with Free Transform
It remains to adjust the vignette using resize, transform and move as needed. To do this easily with the function/Photoshop – Free Transform. Can also press Ctrl+T (Win) / Command+T (Mac) to quickly access a tool using keyboard shortcuts:
To change the size or shape, just click on any of the markers (squares) and drag them. If you hold down Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) then you can change the border size from the centre, not the side. To move the border, simply click anywhere inside the bounding box and drag it with the mouse. When finished, press Enter (Win) / Return (Mac) to accept the changes and exit the tool:
Step 9: cut off the extra spaces
Finally, if you want to trim away any extra white space around the image, go to the image menu at the top of the screen and choose Trim:
This opens the dialog box “Trimming”. Select option: color of upper left pixel:
Click OK to close the dialog box, and Photoshop will save us from any extra empty space around the image, leaving only our final result:
